MD's Message
DOCOMO Europe Limited was established in the UK in 2002 as wholly-owned company of NTT DOCOMO, INC. (called 'DOCOMO' hereinafter) that was established in Japan in 1992. Our DOCOMO brand and service brands such as i-mode have become synonymous with the growth of mobile phone industry and cutting-edge mobile communications technology not only in Japan, but also in Europe and other parts of the world.
Superior technology and strategic investments in R&D and infrastructure have continued to pave the way for DOCOMO's successful evolution from analog to digital and to 3G digital mobile communication services and beyond, and we believe that the strength of our technology, brand and an unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction will be the keys to our future success.
Globally we are promoting dual-mode 3G/GSM mobile phones with our business partners in Europe, and we've also launched data-roaming services, enabling our customers to use the same i-mode services they enjoy in Japan while overseas. But these are just the first steps toward our goal of transforming the mobile phone in to a 'lifestyle infrastructure'. DOCOMO's 'Osaifu-Keitai' (mobile phones with wallet functions) greatly improves convenience with cashless transactions for everything from use of public transportation services to shopping, and already has more than 30 million subscribers in Japan - a perfect example of how we are not only leading in the field of mobile communications but redefining its role in mobile users' lives.
Through wholly owned subsidiaries and branch offices of DOCOMO in Asia, Europe, and North America, and strategic alliances with mobile and multimedia service providers in Asia-Pacific and Europe, we are expanding our global reach. 'DOCOMO' will continue to help our subscribers communicate seamlessly throughout the world and redefine the role of mobile communication and advanced mobile multimedia and 'lifestyle' services.
In Europe, DOCOMO Europe Limited co-ordinates the activities of our two wholly-owned European subsidiary companies:
* DOCOMO Communications Laboratories Europe GmbH - based in Munich
* DOCOMO i-mode Europe B.V. - based in Amsterdam
These companies were established for the research into, and promotion of, mobile multimedia services in Europe. DOCOMO has also formed strong relationships with prominent operators in the European mobile community through which it cooperates to explore and develop new opportunities.
Our European business partners will continue to play a big role in DOCOMO's global success. As more operators recognise the market-leading position of i-mode related services, we will continue to see it expand across Europe.
It gives me great pleasure to spearhead this drive to be the leading force in mobile multimedia services across Europe, to advise and assist our partners by leveraging new technical and commercial innovations from Japan through DOCOMO Europe's technical and sales assistance efforts.
